Biography

Jonathan Paul Arencibia… Single… The right-handed hitting catcher, hit .330 over his college career at University of Tennessee, cementing himself prominently in the school’s record books… Ranks 3rd in UT history in total bases (381), 4th in RBIs (165), tied for 5th in home runs (33), tied for 6th in doubles (48), 7th in hits (230) and 9th in at-bats (690)… During his junior season, he hit .339 vs. left-handed pitching and .326 against right-handers… Ranked among USA Baseball’s college national team’s top prospects last summer after leading the team with nine home runs in 121 at-bats… The Miami native tied Alex Rodriguez’s Westminster Christian High career record for home runs with 17 in 2004.

2010 Highlights

Spent the majority of the season with Las Vegas (AAA), leading the minors in home runs for much of the season prior to being promoted to Toronto on Aug. 5… ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: Made his Major League debut on Aug. 7 vs. TB… Became the first player in the modern era to record four hits, including two home runs in his Major League debut, finishing the day 4-5 with one double, two home runs and three RBI… Hit the first pitch he saw at the Major League level for a home run off James Shields… Appeared in five games before being optioned back to Las Vegas Aug. 19, before returning in Sept… Appeared in a total 11 games, starting in 10… In his final 10 games, recorded only one hit in 30 at-bats… SERVING NOTICE: Was named PCL MVP… Was named a mid-season and post-season All-Star in AAA after batting .301 with 32 home runs and 85 RBI… The 32 home runs were T-3rd for most by a Blue Jays minor leaguer in team history… Was selected as the R. Howard Webster (MVP) winner at Las Vegas… Was 2nd in the PCL in slugging percentage and 3rd in home runs… Batted .400 in June with 22 extra base hits… VS RIGHTIES: Had plenty of success vs. right-handed pitchers, posting a .322 avg., with 30 of his 32 home runs… Was selected to participate in the PCL Home Run Derby during All-Star festivities… Earned Player of the Week honours June 28-July 4…TOP PROSPECT: Was rated as the 8th best prospect in the Pacific Coast League by Baseball America.
